Working hard at hardly working

Career advice: don’t make it personal, this is business

without comments

Thirteen jobs ago, a boss taught me a valuable lesson….”This is an office not your house.”

I thought he was referring to my pants air drying on the credenza. I can’t do that at home the credenza is too small. Nope. He was pointing to my personal affects on the desk.

His reasoning was two-fold; First, it makes it harder to tell your brain this is just a job, not your life, and there is a difference between those contrasting sections. Secondly, it shows management you can up and leave at any moment for a better opportunity. Coincidentally, he put the lesson into action by never putting anything personal on his desk and one day just not showing up for work. He got a better job.

Now, I’d like to pass on that wisdom to all the readers.

Nothing on your desk but work related junk. No pictures. No stuffed animals. No gadgets, trinkets, or mugs from vacation. Especially nothing like this. It’s incredibly tasteless. You want the whole office thinking of your woman like a slut? More than they already do? Secondly, we already know you picture her with a different head every time you dip your pen in her ink. This toy is just Freudian.

Put the toys in the bottom drawer near your liquor flask and work you haven’t completed.

Lesson learned.
